Betty screamed hysterically as Cadeâs big body crumpled to the hard ground. Iddy wanted to scream with her. As if his collapse was a signal, the tableau in the barn unfroze.
Parker, the cameraman, tackled Mackieâs bandy-legged assistant, knocking him flat, sending Wrightâs gun skittering across the barn dirt. Zoe stomped on it.
Iddy ran to Cade. She didnât realize sheâd stopped breathing until she saw him move. Dropping to her knees, she thwarted his effort to sit by shoving both hands against his broad chest. âDonât. I need to stop the bleeding. Lie still.â
She could hear one of the terrified wannabes calling the police. Good, at least someone in this clown production had a little sense. âTell them we need a doctor,â she shouted.
Blood poured from Cadeâs shoulder. She wasnât wearing her white coat. She didnât have her bag. She used the front of his shirt to hold over the wound while she frantically glanced around in futile search of a medical kit. She could feel his heart beating his blood right out of his body. She knew how to do this with a dog. Sheâd never worked on bullets in people.
Evie popped out from behind a haystack wearing a sleeveless denim vest buttoned over nothing. She held out the pink T-shirt sheâd been wearing. âI put it on clean this morning. Will this do?â
Her cousin looked a little worse for wear. If what Iddy had seen meant anything, the ghost was running her ragged. At least Evie wasnât completely drainedâyet. Iddy gratefully accepted the offering and added it to the compress she had formed with Cadeâs shirt tails. âMake the fools run in the house for a first-aid kit or bandages or anything!â
She was pretty certain Evie was texting her team, but they werenât trained medics. They wouldnât be far down the road, so Iddy hoped theyâd take over whatever in heck was happening here.
As if he heard her thoughts, Cade muttered, âDonât let anyone leave!â
Yeah, like that was happening with this lot. She couldnât count on any of them. Cade was the only reliable person on the whole damned farm, and he was down for the count. Ding-dong-dang.
âKennedy,â Cade squeezed through teeth clenched in pain. âHeâll cooperate.â
âBetty,â Iddy shouted. âShut up and call Kennedy in here. Donât anyone leave!â
The Zoe person had handed Parker a leather harness to use in tying up Wright. Iddy had the notion that Wright wasnât entirely responsible for his actions. Sheâd have to ask Evie what she saw. . . some other time. Right now, she was trying to breathe and not panic.
âIâll live,â Cade murmured huskily. âQuit looking like that. Youâll frighten the goats.â
She tried to laugh and couldnât. His blood poured through two shirts. She pressed harder, using the heel of both hands.
She lost track of events about then. Kennedy ran in the back door. Evieâs team ran in the front. Sirens roared down the highway. Evie returned, wearing someoneâs overlarge denim shirt over her skin-revealing vest and carrying a first-aid bag. Iddy had her open it and ignored the rest of the commotion.
